HISTORY OF ALBANY ALUMNI & DELTA XI CHAPTERS
In 1903, Albany State College an institution of higher learning was established in the Albany area. In 1911, Kappa Alpha Psi, a college fraternity was established specifically on the night of January 5, 1911 in Bloomington, Indiana. By mid-1955 three other Greek letter fraternities were already operating on the campus but it was not until May 19, 1956 that the legacy and strength of brotherhood was established.
The Albany Alumni Chapter that organized on March 23, 1950 had four members working campus leaders and faculty members. Through a vision of the Albany Alumni Chapter and Brother Obie Oneal, the head football coach at Albany State College and initiate of the Bluefield College, the network for a chapter began. The names of the Dreamers of the Alumni Chapter are Coach Obie Oneal, Professor Carl Daphney, a history and political science instructor, Brother Thomas Jenkins: Polemarch of Albany Alumni Chapter (President of ASC), and Brother Shopshire the Comptroller. The perseverance and commitment of eight undergraduates made the pursuit of organizing the Delta Xi Chapter a dream come true. On May 26, 1956 a charter was granted bearing the name "The Delta Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc".
The Kappa's at that time were the only fraternity that required initiates to have at least a 2.5 grade point average. The fraternity also required honorable achievement from its beginning at Albany State College. Lester Brown, Alvin Moore, Morris Williams, Judge Ashe, William Talley, Prather Jackson, Albert Clark, and Mason Stovall were chosen to be the chartering line of the Delta Xi Chapter. After their probate show, the Albany State Campus styled the brethren as the "Eight strong who were dressed, ready to go and ready to perform". Once the new initiates probated they set to establish the Delta Xi Chapter by building a strong foundation of Leaders that would bring diversity and strength to the Albany State Campus. History reflects that the Delta Xi Chapter was the first fraternity to carry kanes on the ASC campus and then it gradually spread to other Fraternities on campus.
Past Polemarch's of the Delta Xi Chapter in the beginning are: Lester Brown 1956-1957, William Talley 1957-1958, Prather Jackson 1958-1959. Delta Xi's first dean of pledges was Alvin D. Moore who served under all of the first three Polemarchs. Prather Jackson, a Past Polemarch of the Delta Xi Chapter served as advisor for some sixteen years and is one of the living founders along with Morris E. Williams.[Both have gone to Chapter Invisible]
